What Is Protectapet?

Protectapet is a pet healthcare plan, not a traditional insurance product. This is an important distinction. Their plans are structured healthcare management tools that cover veterinary expenses, accidental death, lost or stolen pets, kennel fees, and more, with fixed monthly premiums that never increase regardless of your pet's age or how many claims you make.

Basic Plan: Full Breakdown

Veterinary Expenses

The core of the Basic Plan covers up to €2,000 per claim and a maximum of €5,000 per year. This includes blood tests, urine analysis, X-rays, ultrasound, surgery, medication, aftercare, and follow-up consultations. A €50 excess applies per condition, charged only on the first claim for any ongoing treatment.

Immediate Accident Cover

Accident cover begins immediately from the plan start date. Illness cover activates after 21 days, which is a standard waiting period common across most healthcare plans.

Kennel and Cattery Fees

If you or your partner are hospitalised for 48 hours or more, Protectapet covers kennel or cattery fees up to €500. This is a genuinely useful benefit that is easy to overlook until you actually need it.

Accidental Death

If your pet dies as a direct result of an accident, the Basic Plan pays out up to €500, for dogs up to age 9 and cats up to age 11.

Lost and Stolen Cover

Up to €250 toward local advertising costs if your pet goes missing or is stolen. You must notify Protectapet within 7 days of the pet going missing.

EU Holiday Cover

An optional add-on covering acute illness and accidents while travelling in Europe, up to €500, for 30, 60, or 90 days per year depending on the option you choose.

Diamond Plan: Full Breakdown

The Diamond Plan builds on everything in the Basic Plan with significantly higher limits and one exclusive benefit.

Higher Veterinary Cover

The Diamond Plan raises the per-claim limit to €3,000 and the annual maximum to €12,500, which is more than double the Basic Plan annual cover. For owners of breeds prone to expensive health conditions, this difference can be substantial.

Enhanced Kennel and Cattery Cover

Diamond raises kennel and cattery cover to €1,750, which is more than three times the Basic Plan limit, providing meaningful protection during longer hospital stays.

Higher Lost and Stolen Payout

Lost and stolen cover increases to €750, giving you significantly more budget to run a proper search campaign and offer a reward.

Accidental Death Benefit

The Diamond Plan doubles the accidental death benefit to €1,000. Age limits remain the same: dogs up to 9, cats up to 11.

Lost Pet Passport: Diamond Exclusive

If your pet passport or health certificate is lost due to theft, mugging, or an act of God, Protectapet covers replacement costs up to €750. For expats and frequent travellers, this is a genuinely valuable addition.

Faster Claims Settlement

Diamond plan claims are settled within 5 to 7 working days compared to 7 to 10 working days on the Basic Plan.

What Is NOT Covered

Transparency matters. Here is what Protectapet does not cover under either plan:

• Hereditary and congenital illnesses: conditions your pet is genetically predisposed to are excluded. Research your breed's known health issues before choosing a plan.
• Pre-existing conditions: excluded unless the condition has been fully cured with no treatment or consultation for 12 months, in which case it may become eligible.
• Vaccinations and boosters: routine preventative care is not covered. Your pet must be up to date with vaccinations as a condition of the plan.
• Flea, tick, worm, and parasite treatments: preventative treatments are the owner's responsibility.
• Neutering and spaying: elective procedures are excluded.
• Annual teeth cleaning: dental care is covered only if your pet has had an annual dental check-up within the last 12 months.
• MRI, CT and CAT scans: not included under either plan.
• Second opinions: not covered.
• Euthanasia and cremation: end-of-life costs are not included.
• Treatments without a specific diagnosis: any claim submitted without a confirmed diagnosis will be declined.
• Public Liability (RC Insurance): this is a separate legal requirement in Spain under the Animal Welfare Law introduced in March 2023. All dog owners must have an RC Civil Risk policy. Protectapet does not cover this but can assist with this via an authorised insurance agent. Hunting dogs are exempt.
• Pets aged 10 and over: old age-related conditions are excluded for pets in this age bracket, unless they have been protected by the Protectapet Healthcare Plan for a period of not less than 3 consecutive years.

How the Claims Process Works

1. Log into your Client Area at protectapet.eu
2. View your plan information and click the blue Make a Claim button
3. Complete the online claim form and attach all required documents
4. Submit your claim. Processing begins once all documentation is received.
5. Payment is made directly to your EU bank account within 5 to 10 working days (5 to 7 for Diamond, 7 to 10 for Basic)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any vet?

Yes. Protectapet allows you to use any registered veterinary clinic of your choice, anywhere in Spain or Portugal. You can change your vet at any time.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit for joining. Protectapet covers cats and dogs from 8 weeks old for life, though old age-related conditions are excluded for pets aged 10 and over, unless they have been protected by the Protectapet Healthcare Plan for a period of not less than 3 consecutive years.

Will my premium increase as my pet gets older?

No. Your monthly premium is fixed for life from the day you sign up. It will never increase regardless of your pet's age or how many claims you make.

Can I pay annually?

No. Protectapet operates on a monthly direct debit basis only. There is no annual payment option.

What happens if I miss a payment?

Protectapet will contact you to arrange an alternative payment method. Your plan will not be immediately cancelled.

Are there unlimited claims?

Yes, subject to the per-claim and annual limits of your chosen plan.

What if my pet goes missing?

Notify Protectapet within 7 days. They will fund advertising costs and a reward of up to €250 on the Basic Plan or €750 on the Diamond Plan.

Does my pet need to be vaccinated?

Yes. Your pet must be up to date with all vaccinations and boosters as listed in the terms and conditions.

Can I cancel if I change my mind?

Yes. Within the first 10 days you receive a full refund. After that, simply contact Protectapet by post or email and they will process your cancellation without difficulty.

Is RC Public Liability insurance included?

No. RC Civil Risk insurance is a separate legal requirement for dog owners in Spain under the Animal Welfare Law introduced in March 2023. Hunting dogs are exempt. Protectapet can assist with this via an authorised insurance agent.
