What Spanish Pet Insurance Actually Covers
If you have already decided pet insurance is worth it, or you are close to deciding, the next question is the one that actually matters: what do you get for your money?
Most pet insurance policies in Spain cover a defined set of veterinary costs. Understanding exactly what is included and what is not is the difference between a policy that protects you and one that disappoints you at the worst possible moment.
Here is what standard Spanish pet insurance policies typically cover:
Veterinary Consultations
Most policies cover the cost of visits to a licensed vet when your pet is ill or injured. Routine check-ups and preventive visits are generally excluded. Coverage kicks in when something goes wrong.
Surgery and Hospitalisation
Surgical procedures resulting from illness or accident are covered by the majority of mid-to-premium tier policies in Spain. This includes anaesthesia, operating costs, and post-operative hospitalisation. A single surgical procedure in Spain can cost between 800 and 3,000 euros depending on complexity and clinic. This is where insurance earns its keep.
Diagnostic Tests
Blood panels, X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs are covered under most comprehensive policies when ordered by a vet as part of diagnosing an illness or injury. Some basic policies cap diagnostic coverage or exclude imaging entirely. Always check the fine print.
Medication
Prescription medication resulting from a covered illness or injury is included in most policies. Over-the-counter products, supplements, and preventive treatments such as flea, tick, and worming treatments are typically excluded.
Specialist Referrals
Higher-tier policies in Spain cover referrals to veterinary specialists such as oncologists, cardiologists, and neurologists when your primary vet recommends it. Budget policies often cap or exclude specialist care entirely.
Emergency Care
Accident and emergency treatment is covered by virtually all policies, including out-of-hours emergency clinic visits. Even the most basic Spanish pet insurance policy will cover emergency intervention.
Reducing accident risk is the best complement to having accident coverage. A Reflective Pet Safety Vest makes your dog visible to drivers and cyclists during low-light walks, one of the simplest ways to prevent the kind of accident your insurance would otherwise need to cover.
Chronic and Long-Term Illness
This is where policies diverge significantly. Some Spanish insurers cover ongoing treatment for chronic conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, and heart disease year after year. Others cover the first year of treatment and then classify the condition as pre-existing, excluding it from renewal. Read this clause carefully. It is the most consequential difference between policies.
What Pet Insurance in Spain Does NOT Cover
Exclusions are what people search for most, and for good reason. Here is what you will not find covered under standard Spanish pet insurance:
- Pre-existing conditions: any illness or injury diagnosed before the policy start date is excluded. This applies universally across Spanish insurers.
- Preventive and routine care: vaccinations, annual check-ups, neutering, spaying, dental cleaning, and parasite prevention are not covered unless you have a specific wellness add-on.
- Pregnancy and breeding: costs related to pregnancy, birth, or breeding are excluded across the board.
- Cosmetic procedures: ear cropping, tail docking, and similar elective procedures are not covered.
- Waiting periods: most Spanish policies include a waiting period of 15 to 30 days from the start date before illness coverage activates. Accidents are usually covered from day one.
- Behavioural treatment: anxiety, aggression, and behavioural therapy are excluded by most standard policies, though some premium tiers are beginning to include it.
- Dental illness: dental disease is frequently excluded or heavily limited. Dental accidents such as a broken tooth from trauma may be covered. Dental illness such as periodontal disease usually is not.
How Much Does Insurance Actually Reimburse?
Spanish pet insurance policies work on a reimbursement model in most cases. You pay the vet, submit the claim, and receive a percentage back. That percentage varies by policy tier:
- Basic policies: 70 to 80% reimbursement of eligible costs
- Mid-tier policies: 80 to 90% reimbursement
- Premium policies: up to 100% reimbursement, sometimes with direct billing to the insurer
Most policies also apply an annual deductible known as a franquicia, typically between 50 and 200 euros, before reimbursement begins. A policy with a low monthly premium and a high deductible may cost you more in a real emergency than a slightly more expensive policy with a low deductible.

A Note on Pet Health Plans vs Pet Insurance
These are not the same thing, and the distinction matters.
Pet insurance is a financial product. You pay a premium, and the insurer reimburses eligible vet costs when something goes wrong. It is regulated as insurance in Spain.
Pet health plans such as ProtectaPet are veterinary membership programmes. You pay a monthly or annual fee directly to a vet clinic or provider, and in return receive a defined set of preventive services including vaccinations, check-ups, parasite treatments, and sometimes discounts on additional care. They are not insurance and do not cover unexpected illness or emergency treatment.
Both have their place. A health plan keeps your pet's preventive care organised and affordable. Insurance protects you from the costs you cannot predict. Many Spanish pet owners use both: a health plan for routine care, and insurance for the unexpected.
Making Sure Your Policy Actually Covers What You Think It Does
Before signing any policy, ask these three questions:
- Does chronic illness coverage renew each year, or does it lapse after the first year?
- What is the annual deductible, and does it apply per condition or per policy year?
- Is there a maximum annual payout cap, and if so, what is it?
The answers will tell you more about a policy's real value than the monthly premium ever will.
